Glycolic Acid
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, such as Glycolic Acid, are one of the safest methods of exfoliation and increasing skin turnover. As we age, a number of skin changes occur which require different types of skin care and treatments. One such change is that the rate of the skin cell replacement is reduced, producing a thinner, more fragile skin. Skin is replaced every three weeks at age 20 but this increases to every nine weeks by age 50. The use of Glycolic Acid will help to stimulate and speed cell turnover, thereby producing more vibrant and smoother looking skin. The top layer of skin will be thinned by the exfoliation of dead cells, but in the deeper layers of skin, new collagen and elastin will be stimulated and the skin will actually become thicker, tighter and more firm.
Lactic Acid
Lactic Acid (an Alpha Hydroxy Acid) is used to accelerate the removal of rough outer skin, improving the skin's appearance and is recommended for those whose skin may be sensitive to Glycolic Acid, . In addition, if you have gotten to the point where your skin is no longer responding to Glycolic Acid products, or you are ready to move up to a higher strength of Glycolic Acid to get results, try a change of exfoliating product instead. The skin gets used to a product after a while and will no longer respond with the same results you were getting. Changing products, such as switching to Lactic Acid to exfoliate the skin, will stimulate the skin into responding and you will get the results you are looking for again! Lactic Acid occurs naturally in the skin and is a primary component of the skins natural moisturizing factor. Lactic Acid may be one of the best treatments yet for hyper-pigmentation.
Salicylic Acid
A member of the Beta Hydroxy Acid family, Salicylic Acid's oil-dissolving properties enable it to penetrate into clogged pores and break down any bacterial infections, dead skin cells or excess sebum which may be lodged inside a pore - making it ideal for acne prone skin. It can also be used to treat Stretch Marks. Ingrown Hairs, Scars, Sun Damage and Aging Skin.
Salicylic Acid Caution: For those allergic or sensitive to Salicylic Acid - If you have allergies to salicylates (such as you cannot eat fruit), we recommend you use an alpha hydroxy acid such as Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid instead.
Pregnancy Warning: Salicylic Acid may be absorbed through the mother's skin. Salicylic Acid has not been studied in pregnant women. However, studies in animals have shown that salicylic acid causes birth defects when given orally in doses about 6 times the highest dose recommended for topical use in humans. Before using this medicine, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant, especially if you will be using salicylic acid on large areas of your body.
Other Medical Precautions: The presence of other medical conditions may affect the use of salicylic acid, especially if you are using a 5% or stronger salicylic acid preparation. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, especially: * Blood Vessel Disease * Diabetes Mellitus (Sugar Diabetes) - Use of this medicine may cause severe redness or ulceration, especially on the hands or feet * Inflammation, Irritation, or Infection of the skin - Use of this medicine may cause severe irritation if applied to inflamed, irritated, or infected area of the skin * Recent Accutane use
